DSL Setup
Nationwide Internet offers DSL through many vendors with many variations in setup. For most subs, Nationwide Offers a preconfigured modem that is sent to the customer for
ease of installment. If the modem is supplied by the DSL vendor, such as Qwest, you will need to call Technical support at 1-888-Nationwide (628-4669) for help in configuring the
modem.
Setup
Setting up Nationwide Internet DSL is straight forward, and usually will only require that the DSL modem is plugged in properly. You should be given a commit date of when you
DSL will be active, and the modem may arrive before the DSL line is active. Once the line is active your first step will be to setup the modem, then to check the configuration of
your computer.
Step 1: Install Line Filters

Devices such as your phones, fax machines, answering machines, or any other device that uses your phone line will need to be filtered. Shipped with your DSL modem will be 3
inline filters. If you need more than 3, you can request more when you order your DSL service. To install the inline filter, unplug your phone, answering machine, etc. from the
phone jack. Plug in the filter, then plug the phone cord into the filter. Again, the filter is not for the DSL modem, so you would not use a filter for it’s phone line.
Step 2: Setup the DSL modem

To setup your modem, you would first plug the phone line directly into the phone jack with no filter. Then plug the other side into the back of the modem.
Next, plug the cat 5 cable into the Ethernet port in your modem and the back of the computer. The Ethernet cord looks like a phone cord but larger.
Note: Most modern computers come with an Ethernet port, it usually has 3 squares placed in a triangle etched into the card. Though the modem comes with a
USB cord, and has a USB port, it is highly recommend that you use the Ethernet connection. If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port it is suggested that you have one
installed.
Finally plug the, Finally plug the power cord into the modem, and wall socket. It often helps if you reboot your computer at this time. Wait till the "wan" or "DSL",
depending on model, light comes on solid.
Step 3: Configure Your Computer
Generally most computers will come configured correctly, but in some cases you may need to check your network adapter’s settings to insure that it is setup for "DHCP."
Windows
Windows 95/98
For windows 95/98 go to the My Computer icon and click on it. You will see a new windows and a folder labeled control panel. Click on it and go the icon network. Here you will
need to click on TCP/IP and then click on the Properties button.
The TCP/IP properties should open up to the “IP Address” tab. Place the dot next to "Obtain an IP address automatically."
Click on the DNS Configuration tab.
Place the dot net to "Disable DNS".
Click on the Gateway Tab.
Remove anything in the Installed gateway box. To remove, click on the item and then click on the button Remove.
When finished click on OK. To make the changes effective, you will need to reboot the computer.
Windows 2000
For Windows 2000, go to the Start button, then go to Settings, then to Network and dial-up connections. You should see an icon labeled Local Area Connection. When you click on
it you will see the Properties button at the bottom of the screen. Once you have clicked on the Properties button, you will see a new screen. In the new screen there is a large
white box with several items in it. Click on the one labeled Internet Connection (TCP/IP), to high light it, then click on Properties.
On this page you should place a dot next to "" and "". Now click on OK, then click on OK again. Now it is a good idea to reboot your computer.
Windows XP
For Windows XP, go to the Start button, then to Control Panel. At the Control Panel you may see in the left hand corner of the screen "Show Classic View". If so click on it.
Now go to network connections and click on it. Once you click on the network connections, you will have a new window pop up. You should see an icon labeled "Local Area Network".
Right click on it and go to properties. In the new windows choose Internet Connection (TCP/IP).
